The Yaesu FTM-500DR has been upgraded with the installation of the FVS-2 Voice Guide Unit, adding advanced voice-assisted functionality to an already powerful dual-band digital mobile transceiver. The FVS-2 is an optional internal module designed specifically for the FTM-500DR/DE series, and its integration enhances both convenience and accessibility during mobile amateur radio operations.
After installing the FVS-2 module inside the main chassis of the FTM-500DR, the transceiver gains the ability to announce the operating frequency by voice, record received audio, and play back important communications. These functions are particularly useful for operators who frequently use the radio while driving, as they reduce the need to look at the display when changing frequencies or confirming the active band.
The installation process involves opening the main unit, connecting the FVS-2 module to the designated internal option connector, and reassembling the transceiver. Once the radio is powered on, the new features become available through the setup menu under the Voice Memory and Voice Guide options. The module integrates seamlessly with the existing firmware, allowing the operator to control all voice functions directly from the radio’s interface.
One of the most practical features of the FVS-2 is its voice frequency announcement capability. The operator can choose between automatic and manual announcement modes. In automatic mode, the radio announces the operating frequency whenever it changes, while manual mode allows the operator to request a spoken frequency announcement on demand. This feature is especially valuable during mobile operation, where maintaining attention on the road is essential.
The FVS-2 also includes an audio recording and playback system. It can record received communications for later review, making it easier to replay missed call signs, frequencies, or important messages. The module supports both continuous recording and a “last 30 seconds” replay function, which is particularly useful when a transmission is not fully understood the first time.
Importantly, the installation of the FVS-2 does not affect the RF performance of the FTM-500DR. The transceiver retains its full 50-watt output power, dual-band reception capability, C4FM digital communication support, APRS/GPS functionality, and WIRES-X compatibility. Instead, the FVS-2 complements these features by improving the user experience through voice-assisted operation.
With the FVS-2 module installed, the Yaesu FTM-500DR becomes a more versatile and professional mobile communication system. The combination of high-performance RF capabilities and voice-guided convenience makes this setup particularly well suited for mobile operators, emergency communication teams, and amateur radio enthusiasts who require reliable hands-free operation in demanding environments.
